The irresistible cliffs.

The Old Red Sandstone cliffs of Skokholm Island, are an amazing red-pink colour, and in some places, are angled at an almost vertical angle. The sandstone has been eroded over the millenia, to form pitted, angular layers; worn by the sea and rain in to sharp jagged edges.

I’ve used heavily textured clay and the ‘Kurinuki’ process, carving and tearing chunks of clay off the slab, then ‘Raku’ firing to create subtly fractured glazes and surfaces, to evoke the raw beautiful cliffs of that wonderful island.

And on the ledges, returning from their long winter at sea, are the first of the guillemots to return to their island to breed: the first ones home.
