Kelp Drifter

Original acrylic painting on canvas

50cm x 60cm

Description

This painting was inspired by my adventures underwater, scuba diving, both in this country and abroad. It combines the beautiful kelp beds of Welsh waters, and the shafts of sunlight piercing the gloom under the weed, with the White-Tipped Reef Sharks found in warmer waters. They glide so effortlessly, with the smallest of sinuous movements, like that of the kelp in a gentle swell, that I couldn’t resist bringing the two together into the same image.

I really enjoyed using fluid acrylic inks to create the loose flowing effect of the kelp: the way they interact isn’t always predictable, so it was quite exciting. I have used ‘interference’ pigments to reflect the light as it pierces the gloom below the kelp.
